Photogrammetry is the process of interpreting data from photographs and translating it into a 3D Space. This method uses photographs taken from hundreds of different angles and creates a three dimensional data cloud by triangulating visual landmarks found in each photo. The data cloud can be converted into a 3D mesh with color information taken from the photography. Once refined and cleaned up by an artist, this photogrammetry model can be a very accurate 3D scan of almost any person or object. Historical fun fact, Photogrammetry actually dates back to the age of Leonardo Da Vinci where he utilized this process in a much more rudimentary form, to triangulate depth of field for added realism in his paintings. It has come along way since then!
Photogrammetry was used to recreate the talent in a 3D space. Our talent was photographed with a locked camera at all vantage points as the talent was shifted smoothly at micro-increments. Tracking markers were applied to the talent to allow the software reference points to align between all of the different shots. This allowed us to translate the data that the camera sees into a three dimensional mesh. We then projected the various textures of the environment, wrapping them organically around all of the contours of the talent. Lighting was matched to our original photography, and artistic post production provided the final detail to recreate our heroes with painted faces as they melt into the background.
Another key element in this particular project, was to create an organic base texture on the talent’s faces in the photography process. Painting their faces allowed us to catch and utilize reflected light along the highlights, pores, and other areas of the face to bring back into the 3D rendered replicas of our talent. When utilizing a scientific process such as Photogrammetry, it is always important to ensure that Creativity leads the way. As process for process sake isn’t what it is about. It is using technology to elevate.
